Health is more than healthcare

Healthcare is important – early and routine screening and health services can help prevent cancer and/or detect early disease when it is more treatable. As an example, in the map above, compare percent late stage breast cancer and mammography centers.

But health is more than healthcare. Neighborhood social and physical environments help shape health, including through lifestyles and habits as well as available health-promoting resources.

SCAN360 in Action

Using SCAN360, the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center outreach team recently discovered an alarmingly high rate of cervical cancer in Little Haiti. In response, experts and community members mobilized to increase the use of at-home devices to test for the human papilloma virus, which, left untreated, can lead to cervical cancer. The practice is now a model for community-based participatory research that addresses health disparities through the promotion of culturally sensitive behavioral and social change.
