Data, Methods & Sources
SCAN 360 summarizes and displays information on dozens of disease risk factors and health outcomes using more than a dozen national, state and private sources of data including: the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and Florida’s Department of Health.
Most estimates are reported for the State of Florida, its 67 counties and 921 census-defined places (CDP), and the 11 City of Miami districts (aka ‘neighborhoods’), however, due to limitations of particular data sources, some estimates can only be reported at the county level.
The rest of this section details the factors that are reported in SCAN 360, organized by data source.
Socio-Demographic Factors
The American Community Survey (ACS)
Eighteen socioeconomic factors (shown below) are reported. These 2016 5-year estimates are pulled from the US Census’ American Community Survey using API calls.
The table below lists the ACS table name, its associated table number, the function that process it from the ‘neighborhood’ package, and the resulting levels of that variable.

Cancer
Florida Cancer Data System (FCDS)
The FCDS statewide cancer registry includes all “reportable” cancer cases between the years 1981 and 2015. A cohort of all cases diagnosed between 2012 and 2016 is used to estimate cancer incidence in SCAN 360.
Age-adjusted Incidence
Florida Department of Health (FDOH)
The state mortality registry, obtained from the Florida Department of Health Bureau of Vital Statistics, contains records from 2007 to 2016. The following statistics were done for the cohort whose year of death fell between 2012 and 2016.
