We were the first in South Florida to use HyperArc to treat brain tumors and one of the first in the world to offer MRI-guided radiation therapy using the ViewRay MRIdian®.

Treatments

Radiation oncology treatments zero in on a tumor to destroy cancer cells or keep them from growing. It may be used as a primary treatment for some patients. It can also be delivered before surgery or afterward, our as an important tool to relieve symptoms caused by a tumor.

Your doctor will consider the type of cancer you have and many other factors to decide if radiation oncology is right for you. All treatment options for your exact case will be explained so you can make an informed decision. The following types of radiation treatment are offered by Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

External Radiation Therapy

External radiation therapy is delivered from outside the body. These options make use of a beam of curative energy targeted with pinpoint accuracy.

  • Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT)
  • MRI-guided radiation therapy
  • Gamma Knife® radiosurgery
  • Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT)
  • Proton beam therapy

Internal Radiation Therapy (Brachytherapy)

Internal radiation therapy options treat the cancer from within the body. Radioactive substances may be injected or implanted as pellets (also called seeds) in or near the tumor.

  • Low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy
  • High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy
  • Permanent implants (seed implantation)
  • Liver embolization (radioembolization)
