The gold standard of cancer care
Sylvester earned the coveted National Cancer Institute (NCI) designation in 2019, becoming the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Florida and one of 71 cancer centers with the distinction nationwide. NCI recognizes cancer centers that meet rigorous standards for transdisciplinary, state-of-the-art research focused on developing new and better approaches to preventing, diagnosing, and treating cancer.
NCI designation further expands Sylvester’s ability to care for patients and our community at large, from increased access to novel therapies and clinical trials, to expanded cancer prevention initiatives, survivorship programs, and more. Learn more about NCI designation.
Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth - University of Miami Health System, is proud to be ranked among the best cancer hospitals in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report 2022-2023 Best Hospitals for Cancer, and is the only one in South Florida.
Our hospital also earned High Performing ratings for 11 areas of care, including Colon Cancer Surgery, Lung Cancer Surgery and Prostate Cancer Surgery. Hospitals that earned a High Performing rating were significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes, complication rates, patient experience, and level of nursing care. The U.S. News & World Report "Best Hospitals" methodology factors in data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, American Hospital Association, professional organizations, and medical specialists.
Highly specialized teams
Sylvester’s experts are world-renowned for advancements in cancer research and care. Our experts work in integrated, collaborative teams to offer you a range of treatment options that lead to better outcomes and higher survival rates. Often sub-specializing in a specific cancer type, our experts are singularly focused on you and your unique treatment.
Most advanced therapies
As South Florida’s only NCI-designated cancer center, Sylvester offers access to the most advanced clinical trials and cutting-edge therapies. In addition to treatments created by our experts in our own labs, Sylvester can offer treatments provided through NCI’s Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program and National Clinical Trials Network program. That means you and your loved ones now have greater access to the newest, most advanced cancer therapies available, right here at home.
Unique treatment plans
Just as every patient is different, so is every cancer. Our highly specialized teams are singularly focused on achieving the best possible outcomes by creating treatment plans specific to your genetic makeup and your specific cancer. That includes using leading-edge technology such as MRI-guided therapy systems, robotic high-intensity focused ultrasound devices, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, and much more.
Phase 1 clinical trials
Sylvester has the only Phase 1 Clinical Trials program in South Florida. Phase 1 Clinical Trials are the first step in evaluating how patients respond to novel investigational treatments. Recently, Sylvester has expanded on this program, more than tripling the amount of interventional treatment trials since 2012, and now offers trials that can’t be found at any other cancer center in the world.
The goal of Phase 1 clinical trials is to determine the safety and efficacy of new treatments in patients with cancer. These trials may help develop more treatment options and, most importantly, give hope for cancer patients.
